The Tenants Of Liberty: What Are They?
In a previous blogpost, I expounded
upon a certain podcast episode released by Ann M. Wolf Media that stated that
the election or, should I say the re-election of Donald Trump (he was President
once before) was an act of grace and mercy shown to us by God [1] and
in that episode, Wolf explained to us how this was an opportunity for us to
return to that source of liberty which is the Lord God who made the heavens and
the earth and to make ourselves right with Him [2] and in my blogpost which expounded upon that episode she
produced, I also explained as to how the God who made us is also the source of
our liberty [3] but what I didn’t get to really
expound in that post but now wish to expound upon more in this post is what the
tenants of liberty actually are and granted that while we can all agree with
Wolf that we need to return to the tenants of liberty, [4] I am afraid that many people don’t even know
what those tenants of liberty are anymore because they haven’t been taught what
they really are. So, how can we as a
nation return to the tenants of liberty if we don’t even know what those
tenants are?
In order for us to return to the
tenants of liberty, we first have to know what those tenants of liberty are
that this current generation has been so ignorant of and what it is that they
are actually founded in and when asked what it means to be free, most people
will typically state being able to say and do whatever it is you want and when
quizzed on their Constitutional rights, they will often cite “freedom of
speech”, “the right to bear arms,” or “right to privacy.”
I even discovered a list what one SM
user of what they believed that our unalienable rights are and should be and as
we take time to read through that list, I am sure we can all agree that the
rights listed are all good things to have and should have [5] but whether the poster of that list even knows
what “unalienable” really means or not, I don’t know but we will get into what
that means shortly because I am afraid that what many, even within the ranks of
the right and MAGA movement, may not understand is what these freedoms were
actually founded upon and the first vital tenant and not one that is just vital
but even foundational is where our rights come from.
Do our rights and liberties come from
our government or do they come from a power beyond civic authority? If our rights and liberties only come only
from the civic powers that be, then what rights and liberties we have are
dependent upon what the powers that be decide that they will be and they can be
extended or restricted as they see fit and even if an extended amount of
liberty is enjoyed under one set of governing officials and rulers, the next
generation of rulers who come after them may very well be more restrictive and
when we take time to study the history of nations, kingdoms, and empires, we
will notice that there are rulers who were fairly lenient with their subjects
and then there would be those who would rule their subjects harshly and even cruelly
and so the rights and liberties of the people of that respective nation and
empire were dependent and determined by whoever was in power over that nation
and empire at the time.
But if our rights and liberties come
from a power beyond that of our civic authorities, then our rights and
liberties do not come from any government nor are determined by any government
but are rights that we are born with and that are inherent but in order for us
to be born with certain inherent rights, then there must be a power greater and
higher than that of any man who has determined from the very beginning of time
itself as to what the rights and liberties of man are.
So, from where did our founding
fathers believe that our rights and liberties to which they believed mankind to
be entitled came from?
We find this answer in the opening
lines of our Declaration of Independence:
When in the Course of human events,
it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have
connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the
separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God
entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they
should declare the causes which impel them to separation.
We hold these truths to be
self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their
Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty,
and the pursuit of Happiness.
That to secure these rights,
Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the
consent of the governed, That whenever any Form of Government becomes
destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish
it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles
and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and
Happiness. Prudence, indeed, will
dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and
transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shewn, that mankind are
more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves
by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and
usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce
them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw
off such Government, and to provide new guards for their future security. [6]
The first tenant of liberty that can
be identified in The Declaration of Independence is that there is a God
by whom all things are made which makes Him our supreme lawgiver and therefore
the sole arbiter of what is right and wrong, good and evil which in turn makes
Him the sole decider of what our rights and liberties are and not mankind.
The second tenant of liberty is that
all men are created equal and just as they, regardless of age, skin-color,
lineage, ethnicity, nationality, gender, economic, or social status, are
subject to the same moral laws and standard that come from God (Num. 15:16) so each
person, regardless of their age, skin-color, lineage, ethnicity, nationality,
gender, economic, or social status, are entitled to the same rights and
liberties for it is written that God is no respecter persons (2 Sam. 14:14,
Acts 10:34) meaning that He does not favor one person above another on the
basis of their gender, skin-color, lineage, ethnicity, nationality, age,
economic, or social status but rather we are judged of Him on the basis of our
actions, what we speak, the nature of our thoughts, the attitudes and intents
of our hearts, and the motives behind our words and actions for all are persons
are made in His image (Gen. 1:26) and it is from one blood all nations are made
(Acts 17:23) because it is from one man and one woman all people descend. (Gen.
3:20)
The third tenant of liberty is
self-evident truth, meaning truth that is made plain for all to see; that is
indisputable. For example, that there is
gravity that holds things in place, that the sun rises in the east and sets in
the west, that the sky is blue, and that 2+2=4 are all indisputable truths and
facts upon which there is universal agreement and what the founders saw as
being self-evident truths is that we are all created beings made equal in the
sight of God with irrevocable rights and liberties
Even the Bible states that “the
invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being
understood by things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that
they are without excuse.” (Rom. 1:20) [“they” being mankind.]
Self-evident truth is fixed and
absolute. It cannot be changed, but then
again, truth altogether cannot be changed but is fixed and absolute, just as
the God who is the source of all truth and is truth (Jn. 14:6) is absolute and
will never change (Mal. 3:6) and is the same always. (Heb. 13:8)
The fourth tenant of liberty is that
governments were instituted for the purpose of securing and upholding our
God-given rights and the only kind of governments that will do this are those
governments founded upon the first three tenants of liberty and who abide
accordingly. Notice that in our Declaration
of Independence that government, in and of itself is not evil, but is in
fact necessary to which scripture also bears witness:
Let every soul be subject unto the
higher powers. For there is no power but
of God: the powers that be are ordained of God.
Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God:
and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation. For rulers are not a terror to good works,
but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be
afraid of the power? do that which is
good, and thou shalt have praise of the same:
For he is the minister of God to thee
for good. But if thou do that which is
evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister
of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil. Wherefore ye must needs be subject, not only
for wrath, but for conscience sake. (Rom. 13:1-5)
A government only becomes evil when
the governing powers refuse to abide in and uphold those first three tenants of
liberty and the very rights and liberties that rest upon those tenants and it
is at that point that either some changes within that government need to be
made and if that is not able to be done, then it is at that point that it needs
to be abolished and a new and better government be established in its place.
If a government at any level or
within any branch refuses to carry out that purpose ordained by the Lord God
who made Heaven and earth, rules unjustly, enables and empowers the wicked
while punishing the innocent and the just, and refuses to uphold and secure
those liberties and freedoms that it was supposed to secure and uphold then we
ourselves are under no moral obligation to subject ourselves to such
government.
But there is one government to which
we will always do well in being subservient to and that is not the government
of men but to the governance and authority of Almighty God who is our supreme
lawgiver as well as the giver of liberty whose government and Kingdom are from
everlasting to everlasting and there is more liberty in obedience to God than
there is to men for He says to us, “Take up my yoke…For my yoke is easy, and my
burden is light” (Mt. 11:30)
But the yoke and burden of men is
hard and heavy for apart from God, any laws he makes are not to serve the
general welfare of the public but to further his own interests and even to the
misery and detriment of his subjects and with that being said, in whom will you
place your trust in and to whom will you submit?
Will you submit to the God who is the
source of truth, liberty, justice, and righteousness or will you submit to the
will of man which is often contrary to the will and ways of God?
From God comes a perfect liberty, a
perfect justice, and a perfect righteousness because God Himself is perfect,
but mankind, even the best of men, are not perfect but are subject to
corruption and because man by nature is subject to corruption and because man by
nature falls short of perfection, his goodness and his understanding of goodness
is flawed as is his understanding of what justice and liberty are supposed to
be and the reason why man is flawed in his understanding and character is
because he is an inwardly corrupt being who needs to be set free of that inward
corruption which never used to reside in mankind because when God created the
world, He created everything, including man, to be good and in that good world
there was a perfect peace and harmony between God, man, and nature, and a perfect
liberty. There was no death, no decay, no
misery, no suffering, no grief, and no tyranny of any sort but there was one thing
withheld from man that he was told not to partake of and that was a certain
from a tree called the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, having been
warned that in the day that he ate thereof, he would surely die. (Gen. 2:16-17,
3:3)
But another force entered into this
newly formed and good world in the form of a serpent that purported to offer
something better than what the first man Adam and his wife Eve, the first woman
already had which they could receive if they would but eat of that forbidden
fruit that they were told not to eat, and even falsely assured them that they
would not die as they had been warned (Gen. 3:4-5) and when they had eaten of
that forbidden fruit, instead of attaining a superior greatness, they were
reduced to an inferior state than the one in which they were created and the sentence
of death was pronounced upon them as they had been warned (Gen. 3:19) to which
they both eventually succumbed but the sentence of death that was pronounced
upon them did not stop with them but would be inherited by all of mankind since
all of mankind descend from them because the corruption that entered into Adam
and Eve upon eating of that forbidden fruit was then passed down to all of
mankind (Rom. 5:12) and it is due to that inward corruption that we all die
(Rom. 6:23) and that inherent corruption by which death receives its power is
what we call sin; sin being not just an act or even an ill-spoken word, but the
corrupted condition of our very nature that influences not only our actions,
behavior, and what we say, but also our very thoughts, motives, and attitudes
that in turn influence what is said and done, but the effects of sin do not stop
even with man, but has affected even all of creation as it twists, distorts,
corrupts, perverts, and eventually destroys all that it touches which is why it
is written that even all of creation itself groans and travails in pain to this
day (Rom. 8:19-22) which is why the world, in which there never used to be
suffering and death is not filled with evil, suffering, misery, decay,
corruption, and death and the one who came in the form of a serpent and tempted
Eve, the wife of Adam into eating of that forbidden fruit who in turn gave that
fruit to her husband who also ate of it, before he deceived Adam and Eve into
that fateful transgression and even before the creation of the world had once
served at the throne of God as a covering cherub but when he was lifted up in
his pride, he thought to make himself equal with God and share in glory that belonged
to God alone (Is. 14:11-21, Ezek. 28:12-19) and as a consequence, that angel who
had been that covering cherub who served at the throne of God and all who sided
with him were cast from the places they once held in Heaven and it was in that
day that this angel called Lucifer then became better known as Satan and it was
he who crept into that once good world in the form of a serpent and caused Adam
and Eve to do that one thing that subjugated not only them, but also all of
mankind who would descend from them and all of creation to an unprecedented
tyranny and that is the tyranny of sin and death and because they chose to
listen to the voice of the serpent instead of heeding the warning of God, no
longer would mankind enjoy the once perfect liberty that they had beforehand and
no longer would there exist that perfect peace and harmony between God, man, and
nature that they had once enjoyed. And
not only did the eating of that forbidden fruit subjugate mankind to the
tyranny of sin and death, but it also gave Satan justification to claim
lordship over the kingdoms, peoples, and nations of the world, (Mt. 4:8-9, Lk.
4:6-7) thereby diminishing the dominion over the earth that had once been given
to man (Gen. 1:26) and while Adam and Eve knew what perfect liberty, peace, and
harmony was like and even though they had once experienced an uninterrupted
fellowship and relationship with their Maker, their disobedience not only
separated them from the direct presence of their Creator and hindered their
relationship with Him and made them subject to an inward sinful condition and
death, but their actions also prevented the rest of us from ever knowing a
perfect liberty, a perfect peace, and a perfect rest, and a perfect harmony with
all of creation, and a perfect and uninterrupted relationship with our Creator,
or immortality. Their disobedience
caused the rest of us to be born into sin, subject to die, and into a world in
which evil, suffering, and death.
We may have an idea or at least some
measure of understanding of what freedom, goodness, peace, happiness,
contentment, and harmony are or are supposed to be, but we have never
experienced them in their perfection for in order to experience perfect
freedom, there could be no tyranny or oppression in any form. In order to experience perfect happiness,
there can be no kind of suffering, sadness, grief, or misery. In order to experience perfect harmony, there
can be nothing at all to divide us. In
order to experience a perfect contentment, we cannot be in want of anything. And in order to experience perfect goodness, there
could be no evil in any form either internal or external.
The happiness, peace, contentment,
harmony, goodness, and liberty that we do experience are not without
interruption or interference and the beauty that we do see and appreciate in
this world is but a shadow and a shell of what it once was and is intermingled
with ugliness; the pristine amongst the marred and the scarred, purity amidst
that which has been distorted, perverted, twisted, and corrupted. Such is the nature of the world as it presently
is but it is not the world that God originally made but it became that way due
to the disobedience of Adam and Eve who believed a lie and the lie that caused
them to eat of that forbidden fruit is that very lie by which sin entered into
the world, death to all of mankind by way of sin, a curse brought upon creation
due to sin, and to a certain extent, the subjugation of the world to the power
of Satan who also by that lie usurped the dominion initially given to man and
it is also that very lie that has made Satan the father of lies (Jn. 8:44) because
it was the first lie ever known, a murderer (v. 44) because by that lie he has
brought death to all of mankind by way of sin which he brought into the world by
way of the disobedience of Adam and Eve who ate that very fruit that caused sin
to enter into them and from them, passed down to all of mankind, and it is also
that very lie that also earned Satan the title of the thief who comes to steal,
kill, and destroy (Jn. 10:10) for by that lie which he caused Adam and Eve to
eat of that forbidden fruit, he, by way of the sin that entered into them and
then was inherited by all of mankind, not only brought death to Adam and Eve
and all of mankind after them, but he also stole much of the dominion that had
once been given to them and not only has Satan stolen dominion, he also continues
to steal from man the peace, happiness, joy, unity, harmony, and contentment
that God intended and desired for all of us to have, and brings destruction to
all that we hold dear and all that we labor such much to build and establish,
and he also robs our lives of meaning and purpose, and yes, he is also a robber
of the liberty that God created us to live under, and all that God has created,
Satan seeks to destroy and he does so by first twisting, perverting,
distorting, and corrupting that which God has made and then after having accomplished
that, he finally brings destruction to it because in his hatred and enmity
towards God, Satan seeks to corrupt, pervert, twist, and taint all that God
holds dear, brings glory to Him, and in which He takes pleasure and that
includes you and me but Satan is not just the destroyer of our bodies or
creation. He is also the destroyer of
souls, working tirelessly and relentlessly to prevent as many people as he can from
being reconciled to their Maker. Every
human being that is born into this world is born into sin by way of that inward
corrupted condition of our nature that we are all born with which causes us to
be estranged from our Maker and through various means and devices, Satan does
all that he can to keep us estranged from our Creator and even devoid of any knowledge
that we might otherwise have of Him and he does this by blinding us to the
truth of God through the inventions of various philosophies, ideologies, doctrines,
creeds, and religions that stand in opposition to His divine revelation,
through the suppression of anything that might undo the very lies that he would
have us take for truth and which might lead us to the knowledge of our Creator
and reconciliation to Him, lulling as many as he can into a false sense of
peace and security and when that doesn’t work, he will do all that he can to
hinder the spread of that truth which comes from God by infiltrating the ranks
of those dedicated to the service of God Almighty to spread heresies and false
doctrines amongst them which oppose and misrepresent the divine revelation and
doctrine that comes from God, cause needless dissention and discord amongst those
who might otherwise be united, lead them into sin and causes them to disgrace
themselves in the sight of the entire world and thereby destroy the credibility
of their testimony, and when that fails, he will try to intimidate they who
might otherwise boldly preach the Gospel message into silence and when he
cannot deceive them with false doctrine, lead them into sin, nor intimidate
them into silence, he will then bring varying degrees of persecution against
them ranging from mere ridicule and social ostracization to violence and even
death in his relentless attempts to keep the souls who might otherwise be won
over to our Lord blind to His truth and anything that might lead them to that
truth by hiding, suppressing, and even destroying any evidences that might open
the eyes of whom Satan holds spiritually captive to that very truth of God that
will set those willing to receive it free from their captivity and what it is
this truth that sets people free from that captivity?
The truth that God is not willing
that any should perish nor be lost to Him forever but that all would come to
repentance and be reconciled unto Him (2 Pet. 3:9) for the Lord God Almighty is
a God of love and mercy, taking no pleasure in judgment or punishment, but in
showing goodness, grace, mercy, and love to all of mankind which He does
display in many ways, but the greatest and most important act of love, grace, and
mercy that God has displayed towards us is in Christ Jesus His only begotten
Son, (Jn. 3:16) whom He sent into the world to take away our sins and by the
shedding of His blood was redemption bought thereby satisfying both the demand
for the penalty, which He, being without any sin (2 Cor. 5:21, Heb. 4:15) took
upon Himself, to be paid for all sin and granting mercy in His death upon the
cross and by His resurrection are we made justified in Him (Rom. 4:25) so that
anyone placing full trust in Him alone for the forgiveness of sin and salvation
will not have to face eternal damnation, but be made a citizen of the Kingdom
of Heaven and granted eternal life and it is in calling upon Him for the
forgiveness of sins and believing that God raised Him from the dead that we are
saved from an otherwise terrible everlasting judgment (Rom. 10:9, 13) and it is
by Him are we reconciled to the Father from whom we had once been estranged (2
Cor. 5:18) and inwardly transformed and made anew (2 Cor. 5:17) and it is this
inward cleansing of the soul and this regeneration which cause all who are
willing to call upon Christ for it, submit to it, and embrace it to no longer
desire to follow after selfish and worldly pursuits but after those things that
pertain to the Kingdom of Heaven, (Mt. 6:33)
to no longer take pleasure in those
things that are evil and displeasing in the sight of the Lord, but in that
which is good, right, and pleasing in His sight,
to no longer desire to walk in the
lies of this present world, but only in the truth that comes from Christ
Almighty, (Jn. 14:6) no longer placing our hopes in the things of this present
world, but looking forward to that new and better world to come, (Rev. 21-22)
to no longer rely on worldly
resources, men, or even our own power, abilities, skills, and wisdom for our
needs and provision but upon God who is able to meet all of our needs, (Mt.
6:25-33) recognizing that the resources of this world and even the people He
brings into our lives are but instruments and vessels through which God meets
our needs and that the skills, power, knowledge, and wisdom by which we might
acquire our provision are provided and instilled in us by God,
to no longer fear what men can do to
us, but rather fearing the God before whom we will have to one day give an
account for how we lived our lives, (Mt. 10:28)
to no longer look to corruptible
institutions within our society for direction and order in our lives but to God
who, by His written Word has given us laws and precepts to be applied to our
lives and which serve to produce and maintain an ordered life, and who, by His
Holy Spirit which comes to dwell within us upon repentance, establishes in our
lives a course and direction in our lives to pursue for His glory,
to no longer seek our own glory but
the glory of God,
to no longer rally behind corruptible
men, but instead behind the incorruptible God in Heaven bearing in mind that
those men and women God raises up for our edification are but instruments and
servants of His for that respective purpose to which He has called them,
to no longer seek to align ourselves
with the things of darkness but only with the things of the light,
to no longer trust in the wisdom of
the world but only on the wisdom and knowledge that comes from above, nor
depend on corruptible earthly authorities to swiftly administer justice, but
only in the power of God to deliver us from evil.
And just as we are made spiritually
alive in Christ, so also we will one day be delivered from bodily death itself
when our present bodies are changed from that which was born into corruption
into that which is without corruption (1 Cor. 15:51-55, 1 Thess. 4:13-18) but
not only will we also see our bodies redeemed from death, just as our souls
have been redeemed from eternal damnation, we will also witness creation itself
being delivered from the curse of sin when the present prince of this world is
cast out and receives his final sentence and defeat (Rev. 20:10-15) and when
the creation is made anew, there will be no sin, no evil, no darkness, nor any
curse. There will be no death, no decay,
nor any pain, nor any hardship, no oppression, no misery, no cruelty, no
despair, or any grief for all of these things will have passed away with the
old corrupted creation but instead, there will only be life, light, happiness,
peace, and harmony before the Lord God Almighty under whom we will have that
perfect liberty that He had intended for us to live under because it is with
God that liberty begins and if you have not done so already and want to be part
of a world in which there exists a perfect liberty, then I urge you reader to
call upon the name of Jesus for the forgiveness of sins because that is where
true liberty begins because the forgiveness of sins means freedom from what
would otherwise be an eternity from an unrelenting punishment of never ending
torment in the fires of hell in which there is nothing more than a permanent
separation from God Almighty which means a permanent separation from His love,
mercy, grace, and goodness, but for those who depart this life in an
unrepentant state, eternal punishment is all that they have to look forward to
because God who is sinless cannot allow that which is sin to enter into His
Kingdom lest Heaven become as defiled as the earth has been. The only way into Heaven is through Jesus Christ
who offered Himself up on our behalf and was raised again from the dead so that
we will be justified in Him which is why it is our faith and trust in Him that
admits us into Heaven and it is upon His inerrant and faultless merit that we
enter into Heaven and not our own which, because of sin which dwells in us, falls
short of the glory of God (Rom. 3:23) which is moral perfection and with the forgiveness
of sins comes entry into a world in which there is that perfect liberty for
which we long and all it takes to ensure your place in that world is a sincere
prayer of repentance:
"Lord Jesus I need you.
I realize that I am a sinner
who has fallen short of the glory of
God
and that my goodness falls short
of your standard of Moral perfection.
Please forgive me of all of my sins.
Come into my heart and into my life
to be the Savior and Lord of my life.
Make me into the servant and follower
that you want me to be.
In your name Lord Jesus, I pray.
Amen."
Know that God is not concerned with
the words that you use to call upon Him forgiveness, but with the attitude of
your heart and if you have, with all sincerity, have asked Christ to forgive
you of your sins, placing your trust in Him only for your salvation and in
nothing else, then your sins are forgiven and your place in Heaven is certain.
