In
this item by The Georgia Record, the writer soundly refutes the claim that
Christianity promotes communism.
The
claim that Communism was of Christian origin is based upon some passages from
the book of Acts where it is written concerning the first days of the Church: “all
that believed were together, and had all things in common; And sold their
possessions and goods, and parted to all men, as every man had need” (Acts
2:44-45)
“And
the multitude of them that believed were of one heart and of one soul: Neither
said any of them that aught of the things which he possessed was his own; but
they had all things in common…Neither was there any among them that lacked for
as many as were possessors of lands or houses sold them, and brought the prices
of the things that were sold, and laid them at the apostles’ feet: and
distribution was made unto every man according as he had need.” (Acts 4:32-35)
But
the author of the piece explains in detail as to how the cited passages are made
out to support an ideology that they do not by pointing out the differences
between the communal practices of the early Church and the compulsory state-imposed
communism; most notably the communal practices of the Church being voluntary
whereas the Communism is imposed through coercive and forceful means.
The author also points out the difference between that which the scripture present as “descriptive” and that which it presents as “prescriptive” such instructions and commands for godly living; sadly there be those who don’t seem to know the difference.
The
author then goes on to list a number of different passages in the NT that do
not condemn possession of private property but actually commend those
individuals who use that which they owned in the service of the Kingdom of God
and the Church.
