Why Christians Need To Vote
If
there is a biblical basis for participation in the course of politics in those
nations in which such opportunity is given it would be the following:
1. To whom much is given much is expected. (Lk.
12:47-48)
2. He who knows what is right and does not do
it, it is a sin to him. (Jas. 4:17)
3. Ye are the light of the world. (Mt. 5:14-16)
For
those of us who live in nations blessed with a representative government, we
have been entrusted with more than those who have not been blessed with
such. We have been blessed with an
opportunity to influence the political course of the respective nations in
which we live and for those of us who are in Christ, if we do not use our votes
in an attempt to affect the course of our politics, the non-Christians will use
their votes to affect the course of our politics and often times, not for the
better but for the worse, and it can even go so far as to take away our right to
be followers of Jesus and to preach His Word without hinderance.
Jesus
said that we are the light of the world (Mt. 5:14-16) and if we are the light
of the world, then as Christians, we are supposed to be a light to the world in
every sector of our society and culture, including our political realm. We have
a moral and divine duty to confront and expose evil and to call and persuade as
many as possible to repentance and one way that Christians can and should be making
their voices against evil heard is by the policies and leaders they choose each
election cycle. For those of us who have
been blessed to be able to periodically choose our leadership, we have been
given a responsibility and a great responsibility to lend our participation because
if we do not use what we have to the best of our ability on behalf of the Kingdom
of Heaven, then we are no different than the man to whom was given the one
talent and who did nothing with it, but simply buried it in the ground (Mt.
25:14-30) and like those to whom the talents were given, we will be called into
account with what we did or did not do with what was given us and we will
either be honored or condemned depending on how what was given to us was
used. In the parable of the talents, those
who had made good and productive use of the talents given to them were rewarded
and given even greater responsibilities, but the man who simply buried his one
talent in the ground, was disgraced and condemned and what a dreadful position to
be in if we do not use well what God has given to each and every one of us, be
it little or much.
I
know one vote may seem insignificant, but each individual vote does add
up. Our votes may not prevail each time
or in every case, but if we remain determined to vote for what is good and
right in the eyes of God, I believe that God will eventually honor those
efforts, even if those efforts may not bear swift or immediate results.
Granted
that there will be times when we will not find political candidates who are as
aligned with the things of God as we would like, but there will always be
candidates more closely aligned with the things of God than another and there
will be times when we may have to choose between the lesser of two evils, because
if we do not side with the least bad option in such cases, we will always end
up with a worse evil.
We
will not be able to eliminate all evil, but our participation in the political
process may very well determine to what extent evil is restrained and
mitigated. As Tony Perkins of the Family
Research Council pointed out:
Our
government was not designed for spectators. It depends on the participation of
the people…
Our
freedoms were not secured so that we could stand aside while others decide how
they will be used…every election is about more than which party wins or who
occupies an office. It’s about the principles that will shape our laws, protect
our freedoms, and influence the lives of our children and grandchildren. When
we stay home, we don’t stop those decisions from being made. We simply leave
them to someone else… So, ask yourself:
if people who share your convictions remain silent, whose values will shape
America’s future? We cannot demand responsible government while neglecting our
responsibility as citizens. [1]
Voting
can even make the difference between liberty and tyranny. One of the greatest complaints about
Christians is that many Christians, including those who claim to hold to the
authority of scripture, refuse to vote and the number of those who don’t vote
are in the millions. Imagine what a
difference it would make if every professing Christian was determined to, as
often as it is possible, vote for the candidates whose policies they believed
best aligned with the teachings of scripture.
We would see the forces of evil in the political arena hindered more so
and mitigated much more so than what we are witnessing today but when we go out
to vote, our focus is not to be on fallible candidates who may disgrace
themselves in some or fashion or who may not always do what we think they
should, or deliver on everything that they campaigned on, but on the policies
they represent and not everything is going to be fixed and solved in one single
election cycle; it may take several election cycles.
In
2024, we set the nation back in a more favorable direction, but whether or not
we as voters will continue to maintain that precedent remains to be seen. I understand that the government is not the
answer or solution to all things and I understand that not everything can be
resolved through the political process and that meaningful lasting change is
not going to be accomplished in the political realm, but outside of the political
realm because the political conflicts that we witness and experience are not
political, academic, economic, or even social or ideological. But rather, the political conflicts that we
see are but symptomatic of a conflict even greater than that and which transcends
every sector of society be it political or not and that conflict is a spiritual
one and one in which many professing Christians are waging very poorly if at
all and to which many within the conservative or MAGA camp may be blind and how
that spiritual conflict which is an age-long warfare between God and Satan, is
addressed is going to determine, for better or worse, the course of our
politics, just as it will determine the course of our entire society, culture,
and nation and as we vote, there are two basic sides that we are voting for and
they are not political parties: The two
sides are:
Life
or death
Good
or evil
Light
or darkness
Truth
or falsehood
Wisdom
or foolishness
Holiness
or sinfulness
Purity
or corruption
Righteousness
or unrighteousness
Order
or chaos
Liberty
or oppression
Angels
or demons
God
or Satan
Heaven
or Hell
Salvation
or damnation
And
each person is going to vote for which ever candidates and policies align
closest to what they are siding with and if we who have chosen the side of God
do not use our vote on His behalf, then the ones who have taken the side of
Satan, whether they realize it or not, are going to be making the decisions that
we should not want being made but should be doing everything in our power to
prevent from being made because if we don’t, no matter how difficult the
choices presented before us may be, then evil will just simply prevail all the
more and for those of us who are in Christ, simply allowing that should never
be an option because we are warned by the Apostle James that those who know
what is right and refuse to do so are sinning against God (Jas. 4:17) and if we refuse to participate in the political
process to the extent given us, on behalf of the things that are right and good
in the eyes of God, and if we are not doing everything that we can to oppose
and hinder the things that stand in opposition to our Creator, then we are
sinning against our Creator and what makes doing nothing against evil a sin
against our Maker is because when we do nothing when we have the power to do
something, we have become complicit in the eyes of God in the spread and
prevailing of evil.
And
if we as Christians do not vote for what is most aligned with the things of
God, no matter how flawed the candidate representing those things that do stand
in agreement with scripture, then our non-votes end up being a vote for the
things of Satan by way of complicity and apathy.
All
I can say is that when each election cycle rolls around, take the necessary time
to compare each policy from each political party platform with what the Bible
says and side with which ever comes closest to being in agreement with the
teachings of scripture and our faith but as we actively engage the political
realm, we need to be just as aggressively in attacking the ultimate source of all
the manifested evils while attacking the symptoms of that source.
I
have said it before: It is not enough to just simply bail out the swamp water
from the top. The clog or blockage that
is preventing the swamp water from being drained must be located, identified,
and removed. The breaches through which
the filthy water is pouring in must be found and repaired. And the fountain from which that filthy water
is spewing forth must be identified and replaced with a fountain that produces fresh
clean water and the two fountains from which the clean water and the filthy
water come forth are representative of two spirits or spiritual conditions that
determine the nature of the water which is the moral and ethical condition of
our society and these two spirits have been at war with each other since before
the creation of the world beginning in the Kingdom of Heaven when a certain
angel named Lucifer, who had served as a covering cherub at the throne of God,
became so lifted up in his pride that he thought he could make himself equal to
God and it was this pride of his that led to him and those who had sided with
him against God to be cast from their positions in Heaven (Is. 14:11-21, Ezek.
28:12-19) and it was in that day that the fallen cherub Lucifer became known as
Satan or the Devil and what he was unable to accomplish in Heaven, he then set
out to accomplish in the newly created world.
And
when God created the world, there was no death, no evil, no sin, no decay, and
no suffering, hardship, grief, sorrow, or pain of any level, degree, severity,
or sort because God had created the world to be a perfectly good world in which
was only peace, happiness, and contentment and it was a world and universe in
which there had existed a perfect and uninterrupted harmony between God, man,
and nature and after Satan had been cast from his place in Heaven, he had crept
into this world in the form of a serpent and where he caused the first man Adam
and the first woman Eve, who was Adam’s wife to commit an astronomically
fateful and consequential act of disobedience that would change the good and
perfect world that God had made into the world as we presently know it today by
deceiving them into eating a fruit from a certain tree that God had warned Adam
and Eve to not eat from and the tree whose fruit God had forbidden them to eat
from was a tree called the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, having warned
them both that in the day that they ate of that fruit, they would surely die
(Gen. 2:16-17, 3:3) but Satan who came to them in the form of a serpent falsely
assured them that the eating of that fruit would not bring death to them as
they had been warned and deceived them into thinking that the eating of that
fruit would cause them to attain to greater heights (Gen. 3:4-5) and when they
had eaten of that forbidden fruit, instead of attaining to greater heights,
they were reduced to a lesser status and the only thing that to which they had
been enlightened was the shame that had come upon their nakedness (Gen. 3:7)
and instead of being spared the sentence of death that they had been warned of,
that very sentence of death for their disobedience was pronounced upon them
just as they had been warned (Gen. 3:19) and the lie that led Adam and Eve into
that disobedience was the first lie that was ever known to be told which would
from that day forth be followed by a multitude of other lies and it was that
very lie told that made Satan who told that lie the father of lies (Jn. 8:44)
and it was by that lie that he led Adam and Eve into the very transgression
that would bring upon them the sentence of death of which they had been warned
but the consequences of their disobedience did not stop with just Adam and Eve
because the sin that entered into them when they had eaten of that forbidden
fruit and which brought upon them the sentence of death was then passed down to
the rest of humanity because it is from Adam and Eve that all of mankind
descends and because we are all descendants of Adam and Eve, we inherit within
ourselves the sin that entered into them (Rom. 5:12) and just as they had
eventually died to the sin that entered into them, so we too die as well because
of the sin that we inherited from them which is why it is written that the
wages of sin is death (Rom. 6:23) and because we all sin, we all die, but the
consequences of the transgression do not stop with even mankind because the
touch of sin taints, defiles, perverts, corrupts, and destroys all that it
touches; such is its pervasiveness which is why the entire creation groans and
travails in pain to this very day (Rom. 8:19-22) and the reason for why the
death, suffering, grief, sorrow, decay, hardship, evil, and pain that we
witness and experience abound in the world today and it is by sin and death
that Satan reigns over this present world and by sin and death does he come to
steal, kill, and destroy (Jn. 10:10) and it is due to the transgression of Adam
that Satan is given justification for claiming lordship over the people,
nations, kingdoms, and empires of the world (Mt. 4:8-9, Lk. 4:6-7) which is why
he is called the prince of this world. (Jn. 12:31, 16:11)
By
a lie did Satan usurp and establish his power in the world and by lies he
maintains his power which is why it is by truth that his power is shattered and
the truth that he has fought and continues to fight against is the truth that
God is not willing that any should perish but that all come to repentance (2
Pet. 3:9) and that redemption is offered in Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior
who is the only begotten Son of God, (Jn. 3:16) who came to us in the flesh,
(Jn. 1:14) and being without any sin (2 Cor. 5:21) was made that perfect
sacrifice (Heb. 7:26-27) that was needed to take away the sins of the world and
because of His perfect goodness, He was able to offer Himself up on our behalf
to satisfy the demanded penalty for all sin and granting mercy and grace
through the shedding of His blood on the cross and after having died, rose
again from the dead three days later that we might be justified in Him (Rom.
4:25) if we will but call upon His name so that we might be saved from what
would otherwise be a terrifying everlasting punishment if we will but call upon
His name (Rom. 10:9, 13) and believe in our hearts that God raised Him from the
dead (Rom. 10:9) for it is by calling upon His name in sincere repentance that
salvation is granted and our souls made clean from sin thereby liberating us
from the threat of eternal damnation and with that cleansing comes a new
spiritual transformation (2 Cor. 5:17) that causes us to no longer desire to
follow after selfish and worldly pursuits but after those things that pertain
to the Kingdom of Heaven,
to
no longer take pleasure in those things that are evil and displeasing in the
sight of the Lord, but in that which is good, right, and pleasing in His sight,
to
no longer desire to walk in the lies of this present world, but only in the
truth that comes from Christ Almighty who is the source of all truth, (Jn.
14:6)
no
longer placing our hopes in the things of this present world, but looking
forward to that new and better world to come, (Rev. 21-22)
to
no longer rely on worldly resources, men, or even our own power, abilities,
skills, and wisdom for our needs and provision but upon God who is able to meet
all of our needs, recognizing that the resources of this world and even the
people He brings into our lives are but instruments and vessels through which
God meets our needs and that the skills, power, knowledge, and wisdom by which
we might acquire our provision are provided and instilled in us by God, (Mt.
6:25-33)
to
no longer fear what men can do to us, but rather fearing the God before whom we
will have to one day give an account for how we lived our lives, (Mt. 10:28)
to
no longer look to corruptible institutions within our society for direction and
order in our lives but to God who, by His written Word has given us laws and
precepts to be applied to our lives and which serve to produce and maintain an
ordered life, and who, by His Holy Spirit which comes to dwell within us upon
repentance, establishes in our lives a course and direction in our lives to
pursue for His glory,
to
no longer seek our own glory but the glory of God,
to
no longer rally behind corruptible men, but instead behind the incorruptible
God in Heaven bearing in mind that those men and women God raises up for our
edification are but instruments and servants of His for that respective purpose
to which He has called them,
to
no longer seek to align ourselves with the things of darkness but only with the
things of the light,
to
no longer trust in the wisdom of the world but only on the wisdom and knowledge
that comes from above, (Jas. 1:5) nor depend on corruptible earthly authorities
to swiftly administer justice, but only in the power of God to deliver us from
evil.
This
is the truth that will set free (Jn. 8:32) those whom Satan has taken captive
in their sins and with his lies, he blinds them to their inherently sinful
state and to the danger of eternal damnation that their sin to which he blinds
them places them in because if any whom he has taken captive with his lies should
become aware that there is a God in Heaven to whom they owe their existence, who
is the source of truth, who has establisher of what is right and wrong, good
and evil, to whom they must one day give an account for all that they have said
and done in this life, that due to their inherent sinfulness there is nothing
that they themselves can do to deliver themselves from the darkness and fires
of Hell they might then see their need for one who can redeem them which may
lead them to seek out and call upon the name of the Lord Jesus Christ in whom
there is redemption for the forgiveness of sins and it is this recognition of that
inherently sinful state which influences not only actions done and things said
but also the thoughts, motives, and attitudes behind the words and the actions
that reveals the need for redemption and it is this need for redemption that
causes the captive souls to cry out to Jesus for the forgiveness of sins in sincere
repentance because it is Jesus who is the way, the truth, and the life (Jn.
14:6) who sets free the captive soul from the clutches of Satan and it is He by
whom the inward person is transformed into a new person (2 Cor. 5:17)
And
just as we have been redeemed spiritually, so one day we look forward to the
liberation of our bodies from death itself when our mortal and corruptible
forms are transformed into that which is immortal and incorruptible and from
that which is imperfect to that which is perfect (1 Cor. 15:51-55, 1 Thess.
4:13-18) and lastly, creation itself will be delivered from the curse placed
upon it because of sin when it is made into a new and better world (Rev. 21-22)
and liberated from the hand of our adversary Satan, who presently claims
dominion, when he is given his final sentence and cast into an everlasting
tormenting fire prepared for him and his followers (Mt. 25:41, Rev. 20:10-15)
and in that new world which will be made, there will be no sin, no death, no
decay, nor any curse, nor any evil, or violence, suffering, misery, grief,
sorrow, mourning, pain, or hardship of any sort for all of these will pass away
with this present world. Instead, there
will only be light, life, happiness, joy, contentment, peace, and rest before
the Lord God Almighty.
So
which side do you choose reader?
Life
or death?
Good
or evil?
Light
or darkness?
Truth
or falsehood?
Wisdom
or foolishness?
Holiness
or sinfulness?
Purity
or corruption?
Righteousness
or unrighteousness?
Order
or chaos?
Liberty
or oppression?
Angels
or demons?
God
or Satan?
Heaven
or Hell?
Salvation
or damnation?
Whether
or not you call upon the name of the Lord Jesus for the forgiveness of sins in
sincere repentance will be what reveals what side you have chosen and you
choose the side of God and have not done so already, then I urge you reader to
call upon the name of the Lord Jesus for the forgiveness of sins today. It is just a sincere prayer of repentance
away:
"Lord
Jesus I need you.
I
realize that I am a sinner
who
has fallen short of the glory of God
and
that my goodness falls short
of
your standard of Moral perfection.
Please
forgive me of all of my sins.
Come
into my heart and into my life
to
be the Savior and Lord of my life.
Make
me into the servant and follower
that
you want me to be.
In
your name Lord Jesus, I pray.
Amen."
Know
that God is not concerned with the words that you use to call upon Him
forgiveness, but with the attitude of your heart and if you have, with all
sincerity, have asked Christ to forgive you of your sins, placing your trust in
Him only for your salvation and in nothing else, then your sins are forgiven
and your place in Heaven is certain.
