Will Charlie Kirk’s Martyrdom Be What Triggers Another Great Awakening?

Will Charlie Kirk’s martyrdom trigger another Great Awakening? Jennifer LeClaire seems to think so [1] and we can only hope and pray that it will be so and already, alongside and upsurge in interest in Turning Point USA, (TPUSA) there appears to have been a significant upsurge in a return to faith and if the longed prayed for Great Awakening does come to pass, no doubt the martyrdom of Charlie Kirk will be credited for it as there have been numerous reports and testimonies of lives being impacted and changed as people, especially young people, have been prompted to learn about who Charlie Kirk was, what he stood for, and why he was killed and in the process of this, professions of faith in Christ have been made, but evidence suggests that a Great Awakening may have already begun to take place even before Kirk’s assassination.  According to Barna research, an increase in church attendance has seen a significant increase among millennials and Gen Z; [2, 3] possible reasons cited by Blue Ridge Christian News being:

A search for meaning in uncertain times. Many young people are navigating a world marked by political tension, economic instability, and cultural division. The church offers a place to find hope and truth.

A hunger for community. In an increasingly digital world, younger adults are craving face-to-face connection, fellowship, and authentic relationships.

The impact of revival moments. Recent worship movements, college campus revivals, and testimonies on social media have inspired spiritual curiosity. [4]

As for these “revival” movements being cited as one of the reasons, it was reports of isolated revival movements that were taken as the first signs of a coming “Great Awakening” I remember last year when reports of a revival movement were taking place at on a University Campus in Ashbury Kentucky and despite the obstacles it faced, [5-7] other similar events were taking place elsewhere [8-10] but there was skepticism among some followers of Christ as to whether or not what was taking place at Ashbury was an authentic revival.  Christian News Network had reported that apostates and false teachers had attached themselves to the Ashbury movement reporting at the time:

The services have been attracting many outside of the university campus and from afar, now including well-known false teacher Todd Bentley…

Bentley, a Canadian charismatic minister and professed faith healer who was behind the so-called “Lakeland Revival” in 2008, took to Facebook to announce that he was on his way this week to the campus—encouraging his followers to “catch” it and meet him there.

“I am booked to spend several days in the #asburyrevival in Wilmore Kentucky this week. This is a sovereign outpouring I’m i’m (sic) going to soak in for a few days! Let’s catch it #Spreadthefire Who is hungry for God too,” Bentley posted to his Facebook page…

In a message to Asbury University about Bentley’s recent post, the university responded, in part, that “[s]ecurity and leadership are aware” of Bentley’s impending travel to the campus.

Additionally, during a call with Asbury’s Director of Strategic Communications Abby Laub, Christian News Network was informed that Bentley “was not invited to come and speak at Asbury, and the university is being very careful to steward what God is doing here.” [11]

In an online interview that has been now viewed close to 80,000 times in just a few days, several Asbury students and an adjunct professor joined false teacher Tony Campolo’s pro-gay, progressive protégé, Shane Claiborne, to discuss what many are calling a “revival” at Asbury University…

Christian News Network reached out to Asbury University’s Director of Strategic Communications Abby Laub several days ago for comment when the video had only amassed 7,000 views—which is now quickly approaching 80,000 views. After addressing the matter surrounding false teacher Todd Bentley coming to the campus, she explained that she was not aware of the Shane Claiborne interview with students and the professor, requesting a link to review it. Laub, however, was subsequently not able to be reached for further comment nor was adjunct professor Clint Baldwin, who took part in the interview. [12]

In a publication called Slow To Write, Samuel Sey also, and understandably so, expressed skepticism of whether or not the revival at Ashbury was actually a revival.

I’ve been to more “revivals” than I can count. I grew up in churches where “revivals” were the norm, not the exception.

I actually became a Christian during a “revival” at a youth retreat. After a weekend of preaching, “prophecies”, prayers, and “casting out demons”, most of the people at the youth retreat accepted the altar call, repeated the sinner’s prayer, and made professions of faith in Christ.

Within weeks, however, the vast majority of the people who professed faith in Christ had returned to unrepentant sin. So I’ve seen firsthand how emphasis on “revivals” instead of repentance harm so many.

It’s with that in mind and the authority of the Bible that I hesitate to call what is happening at Asbury University a “revival…”

I’ve talked to current students, recent graduates, and several people who’ve visited the chapel to experience the “revival”, and there’s unquestionably several reasons why we should be concerned.

Though one student says the gospel has been consistently and explicitly preached since the beginning of the “revival”, others contradict that claim. In fact, one former student who was at the chapel this week told me he rarely, if ever, heard a clear presentation of the gospel at the school.

Another student said: “Attending the few chapels I have at seminary, apart from one [or] two chapels that preach a biblical message of repentance, it’s always been about ‘being who you are’ and God loving you ‘as you are.’ There are a lot of messages that are about being ‘true to yourself…’”

That lines up with what one student said to me: “Unfortunately, I have first-account experience and conversations with people who are attending and speaking on the ‘greatness’ of revival who are actively living in sin (to be blunt).” [13]

If a “revival” is not placing emphasis on a clear preaching of the Gospel message and a call to repentance, then it is not a revival but a spiritual deception but Sey does caution that even if what took place at Ashbury was not a revival but a spiritual deception, that doesn’t mean that there have not been genuine cases of sincere repentance:

I’ve watched hundreds of videos of the “revival”, and I still haven’t seen any clips showing a clear preaching of the gospel. Of course, that isn’t evidence that people aren’t preaching the gospel. [14]

Even going on to remind his readers that even he himself was saved at a so-called revival in spite of the spiritual deception that was taking place there:

just because some of us do not think it’s a revival doesn’t mean we believe God isn’t regenerating people at Asbury.

There are plenty of reasons why we should be concerned about some of what’s happening—or not happening—at Asbury. But as I suggested earlier, I became a genuine Christian at a fake revival.

God saved me in spite of mostly heretical series of sermons by a prosperity gospel, female pastor. If God can save a wretch like me in that chaotic environment, I don’t doubt that he can save anyone anywhere. [15]

Even if what happened at Ashbury was not a genuine revival, that doesn’t necessarily mean that other revival movements that were allegedly inspired by the Ashbury event are not genuine revival movements or that calls to repentance are not being emphasized.  If a clear presentation of the Gospel is being emphasized along with calls to repentance, then a revival may very well be taking place because as Sey point out in his piece, that is what a true honest regenerative, and reformative revival requires:

if we actually cared about simply preaching that God became a man, lived a sinless and righteous life, suffered on a cross, received our sins, gave us his righteousness, died to satisfy the wrath of God, and rose again for our justification—so that God would declare us righteous by faith: there would probably be more repentance that would lead to a real revival. [16]

And yet interestingly, just as Blue Ridge Christian News had mentioned, Sey admits that “I think one of the reasons why so many people are eager to call what’s happening at Asbury a ‘revival’ is because some people are desperate for change in our culture. Frankly, for some people: idols are being exposed.” [17]

Not meaning to be insensitive, but if a Great Awakening does occur, the martyrdom of Charlie Kirk will not be the only event causing it to transpire and if his martyrdom does accelerate a return of the nation and the culture to Christ Jesus, it will no doubt be credited as a catalyst for a Great Spiritual Awakening in our nation just as President Trump has been credited for a revival in patriotism and political conservativism in the form of the MAGA movement, and just as Martin Luther has been credited for the Protestant reformation beginning with his famous posting of his 99 thesis upon the doors of a Cathedral but a careful study of the reformation movement will reveal that a reformation within the Church was already underway before Luther’s famous act that was credited for setting it off as there were those preceding Luther who were also hard at work at confronting the errors and heresies of the papacy and seeking to bring the masses back to the pure doctrine of the faith as it was in the first century; figures such as Jan Huss (after whom the Hussites were named), John Wycliffe credited for producing the first English translation of the Bible from Latin to English, and the Waldensians who refused to bow the knee to the Papal Ceasars but to remain true to the purity of the faith and paid a most heavy price for it.

And likewise, it was not Trump who began the MAGA movement as we know it, inasmuch as he is credited for its formation and has been the face of it, but rather, the MAGA movement sprang up out of the Tea Party movement which began six years before the MAGA movement burst upon the scene.  And if you would like, the Tea Party movement was rather the morning star of the MAGA movement, for if there had been no Tea Party movement, there might not have ever been a MAGA movement and Charlie Kirk might never have been inspired to create Turning Point USA, just like if there had been no John Wycliffe or Jan Huss, Martin Luther might not have been prompted to do his part in exposing the corruption, heresy, and wickedness within the papacy.

A disillusionment with the anti-Christ Democrat party and leftist policies was already underway when the Tea Party movement burst upon the scene and it was a disillusionment that was transcending skin-color, gender, economic and social classes, and even political factions, and that disillusionment grew even stronger with the exposure of government and political corruption taking place at all levels of government and within both major political parties, and not only with the exposure of political and civic corruption and wickedness, but also the corruption and evil within our education and academic system, scientific, and medical establishments; especially during the 2020 COVID lockdowns and the dark and perilous days of the Biden administration.  Many people saw that they could no longer place full trust in the institutions and establishments to which they had once looked to shape and guide the course of society and so many began searching for something not of man that was incorruptible and in which they could place their full trust, provide them a lasting sense of purpose and meaning, to help them make sense of the times in which they are living, and to provide them a sense of inner peace.

Going back to the Barna research study, which was conducted before Charlie Kirk’s assassination, the reported revival movements were not just a passing fad.  They were and may very well be preludes to something bigger to which the martyrdom of Charlie Kirk may very well add more strength which, according to his widow, Erika Kirk, could very well be transpiring, or, at least we can only hope and pray:

After Charlie's assassination, we didn't see violence.
We didn't see rioting.
We didn't see revolution. Instead, we saw what my husband always
prayed he would see in this country. We saw revival.
This past week, we saw people open a Bible for the first time in a decade.
We saw people pray for the first time since they were children. We saw people go to a church service for the first time in their entire lives. [18]

If the “revival” that Erika Kirk says that we saw moves beyond the Charlie Kirk Memorial, then I say we indeed may be seeing revival, but if people begin to fall back into their previous ungodly and complacent ways, then the last few weeks were nothing more than a passing phase.

Is that to say souls didn’t come to Christ during that time and that there were not sincere seekers of God? No, I am not saying that, but a passing phase is not enough to turn America back to the Lord as a revival or a Great Awakening is an ongoing event that carries on for an extended period of time or at least for as long as the people dedicate themselves to keeping it going from generation to generation but if we are to have a successful Great Awakening, there needs to be serious reform within the body of Christ in order to be better able to disciple newcomers to the faith and to be the light and light of the world that we were established but I fear that we are ill prepared for that task because we have given into cowardice and faithlessness when we should have been courageous and faith-filled.
We have been silent when we should be speaking up.
We have been trusting in other things to meet our needs instead of trusting in God to do so.
We have feared man more than God before whom all men will be judged.
We have valued the temporal honors and favors of this present world more than the eternal honors and favor of God.
We have been distracted by the cares and worries of this life instead of keeping our focus on the next life.
We have allowed ourselves to be more consumed with storing up treasures on earth than treasures in Heaven.
We have been complacent in preserving the purity of the doctrine of our faith instead of being vigilant and have failed to read and study the scriptures regularly instead of diligently studying them and as a consequence, we have been deceived and led astray by various false doctrines and heresies and we don’t even realize it because we have relied upon the Sunday sermon for our doctrine rather than taking the time to read and study the scriptures for ourselves to determine whether that which we read and hear is in agreement with the doctrines and tenets of our faith.
We have been lazy and apathetic in our service to Christ instead of being diligent and zealous in His service.
We have tolerated and celebrated within our ranks the things that dishonor and displease the God we claim to serve instead of holding accountable those who persist in doing those things and teaching those things contrary to the teachings of the divinely inspired scriptures.
We have trusted in the wisdom and philosophies of this world rather than in the wisdom that comes from God.
We have relied on the counsel of so-called experts instead of the counsel that comes from God.
And we have taken a compromised approach to the scriptures by which the Gospel is delivered to us and have imposed our own interpretations upon the text rather than putting away our presuppositions and receiving the text in accordance to how it presents itself.

In order to be the light to the world that we are supposed to be and in order to be prepared in effective discipling, this is what we need to do:

We need to show ourselves as trusting God to meet all of our needs (Mt. 6:25-33) and in nothing else recognizing that the means that He uses to provide our needs are not the providers themselves but it is God Himself who is the provider.
We need to stop fearing man more than God before whom all men will be judged but instead fear God more than man (Mt. 10:28) and resolve to obey God instead of men (Acts 5:29) when the commands of God and the demands of men come into conflict with one another.
We need to value less the temporal honors and favors of this present which will pass away and value more eternal honors and favor of God which will last forever.
We should stop being distracted by the cares and worries of this life and keep our focus on the next life.
We should stop allowing ourselves to be more consumed with storing up treasures on earth and concern ourselves more with storing up treasures in Heaven. (Mt. 6:19-20)
We need to stop being complacent and be vigilant in preserving the purity of the doctrine of our faith which requires of us a diligent reading and study of scripture so as show ourselves ready and able to preserve the integrity of our faith (2 Tim. 2:15)
We should stop being passive and apathetic in our service to Christ and be more diligent in our service to Him and with zeal and passion.
We should stop harboring, tolerating, and even celebrating within our ranks the things that dishonor and displease the God we claim to serve and start holding accountable those among us who persist in doing those things and teaching those things contrary to the teachings of the divinely inspired scriptures. (Mt. 18:15-17, 1 Cor. 5:1-8, 11, 13, Titus 2:10, 13, Mt. 7:15-20, Acts 20:28-31, 2 Cor. 11:3-4, 12-15, Gal. 1:6-9, 1 Tim. 1:19-20, 4:1-3, 7, 5:22, 6:3-5, 20-21, 2 Tim. 2:16-18, 23, Titus 1:10-16, 2:11, 2 Pet. 2, 3:15-16, 1 Jn. 4:1-3, Jude)
We should stop trusting in the wisdom and philosophies of this world rather which are errant and place our trust wisdom that comes from God which is perfect.
We should stop relying on the counsel of so-called experts rely on the counsel that comes from God.
We should stop taking a compromised approach to the scriptures by which the Gospel is delivered to us and to receive the text in accordance to how it presents itself and rely upon the sufficiency of its teachings and place our full faith therein.
We also need to be prepared to pull down of strong holds, cast down imaginations, and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God and bring into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ. (2 Cor. 10:4)
We need to be prepared to give an answer to all who ask concerning the faith and hope that lies within us (1 Pet. 3:15) and as often as it is needed, to earnestly contend for the faith (Jude 3)

When we see that kind of reformation within the body of Christ take place, then we will see an ongoing revival in the land but revival cannot be just a periodic occurrence.  It is something that we must be dedicated to every day because darkness is always attempting to enter into our hearts and minds and not just from without, but there is a darkness within us that we struggle against daily in some form or fashion and that struggle is not entirely the same for each person because for each person, that inward struggle is a little different for them than it is for another, but one thing each person has in common is that we are all born into a spiritual darkness and estranged from our Creator due to an inherit corruption that resides within each and every one of us that we inherited from the first man Adam whom God created and from the first woman Eve whom God had created to be Adam’s wife and when this corruption by which we are all defiled entered into them, it was then passed down from them to all of mankind as it is from Adam and Eve from whom we all descend but before this corruption entered into Adam and Eve, there was no spiritual darkness in the world because when God created the heavens and the earth, He had made the world to be a place in which dwelt only the things of life and light as He had created all that is in the universe to be good and not evil but that all changed when Adam and Eve had created a most consequential transgression beyond comprehension and that fateful world-changing transgression had to do with a certain fruit from a tree called the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, having been warned of God that in the day that they ate of that fruit, they would surely die (Gen. 2:16-17, 3:3) but instead of heeding the warning, they ate of that forbidden fruit and it was in that day that this corrupted condition which the Bible calls sin entered into them and when sin entered into them, then so did death (Gen. 3:19) for it is by sin that death receives its power, but sin and death were not confined to just Adam and Eve, from whom all of mankind descend, but was passed down to all of us, because we all descend from them, (Rom. 5:12) for sin is not merely confined to an outward act or even wrongly and evil spoken words, it begins from within because it is an inward corruption that influences not only speech and actions, but also defiles our thoughts, darkens our hearts, corrupts our motives, and poisons our attitudes and because sin is the corrupted condition of our inward human nature that produces within us things that are contrary to what God created us to be and because of this corrupted condition, we all sin and as a consequence, we all die (Rom. 6:23) just as Adam and Eve did but the consequences of sin have not been kept confined to just man alone, but have, by way of a curse, been extended to all of creation which is why the creation groans and travails in pain to this day (Rom. 8:19-22) which is why the earth is filled with famines, sickness, disease, death, decay, misery, evil, suffering, hardship, cataclysms, grief, pain, and sorrow of every sort and severity but worst of all, our sin has made us to be estranged from our Creator for that which is sinless and incorruptible cannot join itself to that which is filled with corruption and sin and when we take time to examine ourselves before the Lord God Almighty and not just our acts and even the words we speak, but also every thought, motive, and attitude of our hearts, it is only then we begin to understand how we all fall short of the glory of God which (Rom. 3:23) which is moral perfection and why we are all in need of redemption and in His love and in His mercy, God has provided us redemption on our behalf in His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ, (Jn. 3:16) who came to earth as a man to offer Himself up to death on our behalf and did so by His death upon the cross on which His blood was shed and by the death of Him in whom there is no sin (2 Cor. 5:21) was the demanded penalty for sin satisfied and mercy granted and after having offered Himself up as that needed perfect and unblemished sacrifice, (Heb. 7:26-27) He rose from the grave so that we may be made justified in Him by our faith in Him for the forgiveness of sins and the salvation of our souls (Rom. 4:25) from what would otherwise be an unimaginably agonizing terrifying, fearful, judgment and punishment filled with an unrelenting torment from which there is no relief day or night for that is what must be done with all sin and with those who remain in their sins, but those who call upon the name of Christ for the forgiveness of sins are saved from that judgment (Rom. 10:13) and are assured a place in Heaven and in the new and better world to come and with the forgiveness of sins comes the inward transformation of our souls (2 Cor. 5:17) and reconciliation to God from whom our sins had once separated us (2 Cor. 5:18) thereby producing in us a change that causes us to no longer desire to follow after selfish and worldly pursuits but after those things that pertain to the Kingdom of Heaven, (Mt. 6:33)
to no longer take pleasure in those things that are evil and displeasing in the sight of the Lord, but in that which is good, right, and pleasing in His sight,
to no longer desire to walk in the lies of this present world, but only in the truth that comes from Christ Almighty, (Jn. 14:6) no longer placing our hopes in the things of this present world, but looking forward to that new and better world to come, (Rev. 21-22)
to no longer rely on worldly resources, men, or even our own power, abilities, skills, and wisdom for our needs and provision but upon God who is able to meet all of our needs, (Mt. 6:25-33) recognizing that the resources of this world and even the people He brings into our lives are but instruments and vessels through which God meets our needs and that the skills, power, knowledge, and wisdom by which we might acquire our provision are provided and instilled in us by God,
to no longer fear what men can do to us, but rather fearing the God before whom we will have to one day give an account for how we lived our lives, (Mt. 10:28)
to no longer look to corruptible institutions within our society for direction and order in our lives but to God who, by His written Word has given us laws and precepts to be applied to our lives and which serve to produce and maintain an ordered life, and who, by His Holy Spirit which comes to dwell within us upon repentance, establishes in our lives a course and direction in our lives to pursue for His glory,
to no longer seek our own glory but the glory of God,
to no longer rally behind corruptible men, but instead behind the incorruptible God in Heaven bearing in mind that those men and women God raises up for our edification are but instruments and servants of His for that respective purpose to which He has called them,
to no longer seek to align ourselves with the things of darkness but only with the things of the light,
to no longer trust in the wisdom of the world but only on the wisdom and knowledge that comes from above, nor depend on corruptible earthly authorities to swiftly administer justice, but only in the power of God to deliver us from evil.

And just as our souls are made clean from sin, so one day also will we be liberated from bodily death when our bodies are transformed from that which is corruptible into that which is incorruptible (1 Cor. 15:51-55, 1 Thess. 4:13-18) for in that which is incorruptible dwells no sin and where no sin is, death is not.  And finally, creation itself will be delivered from the curse that came upon it because of sin when it is made anew into a creation in which there is no sin, no death, no curse, no decay, no evil, no pain, no grief, no misery, no sorrow, no hardship, nor any suffering of any kind but only peace, joy, harmony, and happiness before the Lord God Almighty. (Rev. 21-22)

If you want to be sure that you are not a part of the swamp of this evil world, I urge you to call upon the name of the Lord Jesus today for the forgiveness of sins so that you may be cleansed of the swamp stain of sin and thus become a vessel through which the life-giving water that comes from our Maker can be offered to any willing to receive it so that they too can be redeemed in Christ and also be turned into faithful servants and vessels of His as well.  It is but a simple sincere heartfelt prayer of repentance away:

"Lord Jesus I need you.

I realize that I am a sinner
who has fallen short of the glory of God
and that my goodness falls short
of your standard of Moral perfection.

Please forgive me of all of my sins.
Come into my heart and into my life
to be the Savior and Lord of my life.
Make me into the servant and follower
that you want me to be.
In your name Lord Jesus, I pray.

Amen."

Know that God is not concerned with the words that you use to call upon Him forgiveness, but with the attitude of your heart and if you have, with all sincerity, have asked Christ to forgive you of your sins, placing your trust in Him only for your salvation and in nothing else, then your sins are forgiven and your place in Heaven is certain.
